Jiuchi
Jiuchi, commonly referred to as "ji," is a simple base beat or backing rhythm used in the Japanese form of music called Taiko. Ji can be played by almost any instrument of Taiko, but is most commonly played on the larger drum, called the "odaiko." It usually consists of a simple, steady rhythm, played on the downbeat (don don) or it can be further developed into a swing beat (don go) or even what is know as a horse beat, (don dogo don dogo don). The ji is usually played throughout a song to create a united, continuous flow for other instruments to follow.
