Jip and Janneke

Jip and Janneke is a series of children's books in Holland, written by Annie Schmidt between (roughly) 1960 and 1990. The series is known for its simplicity, its wittiness, and its habit of se-pa-ra-ting syl-la-bles to make it easier to read for young children. Most books are between 20 and 40 pages in length, although story collections exist.

Surprisingly, the series was translated into a number of other languages, including Latin (called Jippus et Jannica). The series has become something of a public memory of youth, and has inspired a large number of merchandise. One of the best known of these is Jip and Janneke Wine, which is a non-alcoholic carbonated lemonade popular at children's parties and for new year celebration.
