Education and a statewide lottery were major issues in Hodges' campaign. Hodges was the first candidate to defeat an incumbent governor in a general election since Wade Hampton III defeated Governor Daniel Henry Chamberlain in 1876 when he he defeated the Republican incumbent, David Beasley 53%-45%. He also instituted the construction of the New Copper River Bridge in Charleston, SC which when completed will be North America's longest cabled spanned bridge.
