Jilava

Map of Ilfov county with Jilava commune highlighted

Jilava is a village near Bucharest. The king Carol I of Romania built a fort here, in order to assure the defensive system of his capital.

Later, this fort has become prison and its sad fame is linked to the beginning of communist rule in Romania. After the WWII, Romania was occupied by the Red Army which installed a communist government formed mostly by Comintern agents.

The name derives from a Romanian word meaning "humid place".
