Jijabai, mother of Shivaji, was the daughter of Dhanaji Jadhav. He was a jagirdar in the court of Adilshah of Bijapur in present day Karnataka. She was instrumental in establishment of rule of law in the Jahagir of her husband Shahaji Bhonsale. She had eight children, last of whom was Shivaji. Her elder son Sambhaji was killed in a battle with Afzal Khan from court of Adilshah.
