Jauja
Jauja is a town in central Peru with a population of 105,000. It is situated in the fertil Montaro valley, 18 kilometers to the north of Huancayo (the capital of Junín Region), at an altitude of 3,755 m.
First cathedral in Peru
After the Spanish conquered Peru, the conquistador Francisco Pizarro established Jauja as its first capital. Later he founded Lima which then took over the capital role.
Huancayo later overshadowed Jauja as a commercial center, but Jauja retains much of its colonial-era charm.
