Iraqi Intelligence Service

The Iraqi Intelligence Service (Jihaz Al-Mukhabarat Al-A'ma, also known as Mukhabarat, General Directorate of Intelligence, or IIS) was the main state intelligence organization in Iraq under Saddam Hussein. While primarily concerned with internal security, it was responsible for both foreign and domestic intelligence, and for the oversight of the rest of the state security apparatus, with agents in the police and armed forces. Because of its role in suppressing internal unrest, the Mukhabarat was greatly feared.

The Mukhabarat is believed to be responsible for a number of assasinations and attempted assasinations abroad. These include the assasinations of Sheikh Talib Al-Suheil Al-Tamimi in Beirut (April 1994), Ayatollah Mehdi Al Hakim in Sudan (January 1988), and Dr Ayad Habashi in Rome (October 1986), as well as the attempted assasinations of President George W. Bush and the Emir of Kuwait.
