Ionica

Ionica was the name of a telephone system in the UK, with its head office in Cambridge.

The Ionica system used a microwave transmitter in order to provide the local loop. This avoided a reliance on British Telecom for this final link to the consumer.

Add on services included a second line – and several incoming numbers linked to different ring-tones.

The infrastructure costs proved too high to maintain the business and it ceased trading at the end of the 1990's.
