Ink stone

An ink stone is a solid material that is ground and mixed with water to produce an ink for writing.

The ink stone is a bar of compressed powdered material, usually the ash from burning certain woods though other materials are sometimes used. This technique is Asian in origin and is the main technique in making inks for Japanese ink paintings.
