Il matrimonio segreto

Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) is an opera by Domenico Cimarosa. The libretto, based on the play The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman the Elder and David Garrick, is by Giovanni Bertati. It was first performed on 7 February 1792 in Vienna.

A widely popular example of opera buffa in its day, it is no longer frequently performed. The plot follows a standard format of the genre in its improbable situations, disguises and ultimately facile ending. While tuneful and enjoyable, the work suffers from comparisons to other composer's comic operas, in particular those of Rossini and Mozart.
