Icelandic Coast Guard
The Icelandic Coast Guard (Landhelgisgæsla Íslands) was formally founded on July 1, 1926. However, Iceland's defense of its territorial waters began around 1920. On June 23, 1926 the first ship of the Coast Guard arrived in Iceland and was named Óðinn (Odin).
Foreign vessels began fishing in Icelandic waters in the beginning of the 1400. First there were only British fishermen but soon fishermen from many other Western European countries showed up.
