The Icelandic team nearly advanced to the second round instead of the eventual silver medallist Czechoslovak team. After both teams had lost to East Germany, defeated Tunisia, and tied each other, they both had 3 standings points and were tied for second in the division. The Czechoslovakia team had the tie-breaker advantage, however, and the Iceland squad was relegated to third place in the division and playing in the ninth- to twelfth-place consolation round. There, they lost to Poland and then Japan.
