History

The first residents of the île de la Cité date from the Gaul era, but the Right Bank was first populated at the start of the Middle Ages. Since the end of the 19th century, le Marais has been populated by a significantly Jewish population, the Rue des Rosiers being their main base, with a handful of kosher restaurants. Since the 1990s, gay culture has made its impact on the arrondissement, opening a number of rainbow-flagged bars and cafés in the area by the town hall.
