IA-8 refers to Intel Architecture, 8-bit

Intel built on the success of its 4-bit processors by creating an 8-bit general purpose CPU microprocessor, and setting off the microcomputer boom of the 70's. This family is the IA8, and is the progenitor of the x86 series of chips, this being generation zero.
