The Song
Released in 1992, it was co-produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. The song is a cover of The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There", and was originally written by Berry Gordy, Bob West, Hal Davis, and Willie Hutch. This performance is a duet with R&B singer Trey Lorenz. In this tragic ballad, Mariah explains to Trey, how whenever he needs her "she'll be there".
This song had been a last minute addition to the MTV Unplugged program, as Mariah was informed that apparently most acts on the show usually perform at least one cover. Thus her setlist was revised to include "I'll Be There", apparently eliminating either "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Love Takes Time", or "Vanishing" from the tracklist.
Chart Success
After her initial string of #1 hits had been stopped by two singles that did not reach the top ("Can't Let Go" at #2 and "Make It Happen" at #5), "I'll Be There" was a return to form for Mariah, hitting #1 for two weeks on The Hot 100. The single was also her highest debut to date, debuting at an impressive #13. On the component charts, the single hit #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay and #3 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. The single also became Mariah's 5th #1 single on the Adult Contemporary Singles chart. The song was also a major hit around the world, peaking at #2 in the UK and #9 in Australia.
Awards
"I'll Be There" was nominated for the 1993 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, but it did not win.
Music Video
The music video of this song is straightforward and is directly derived from her MTV Unplugged appearance. Mariah, her background singers, and the live band are all seen wearing black clothes.
Remixes
As the track is a live performance, there are no remixes for this track. A radio edit, however, was created to fade in and fade out and eliminated superfluous talking from Mariah. The album version and radio edit also exlude an in-song introduction of Lorenz (which can be seen on the program and video).
