The Hvannadalshnjúkur is a volcano in the south of Iceland. It measures up to 2119 m and is therefore also the highest mountain of the island.
The volcano is to be found at the limits of the Skaftafell National Park and it lies under the glacier Öræfajökull.
The name of the glacier means glacier of disaster. And it was so named after major volcanic eruptions in 1362 which destroyed many farms in the region. The last time the volcano erupted was in 1727, and, although the farms were re-built, the area is still known by the name Öræfi, meaning wasteland.
It is possible to hike onto the summit of Hvannadalshnjúkur by crossing the glacier.
