Anatomy of a humidifier
A simple humidifier consists of just a couple of basic parts: the parts are a water-containing reservoir, a wick and a blower fan.
The reservoir
Humidifiers come in all different shapes and sizes, and with each size comes a different size reservoir. The reservoir is a large bucket that water is put into before the humidifier is switched on. When the unit is switched on, water moves from the reservoir towards the wick.
The wick
The wick is a filter that absorbs water diverted from the reservoir. Evaporation of water from the wick is dependent on relative humidity. A room with low, or 0%, humidity will have a higher evaporation rate many times greater compared to a room with high, or 100%, humidity.
The fan
The fan is adjacent to the wick, and as it blows on the filter, water evaporates, changing from a liquid state into a gaseous state called water vapor.
Types of humidifiers
Humidifiers are categorized into different types, namely
- Wick Humidifier
- Evaporative Humidifier
- Vaporizer (or Steam Humidifier)
- Impeller Humidifier
- Ultrasonic Humidifier
Testing humidity
Humidity can be tested by using a device called a hygrometer
