Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the name of the human pneumovirus. It is a negative single-stranded RNA virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, subfamily Pneumovirinae.
RSV causes respiratory tract infections at all ages. It is the major cause of lower respiratory tract infection during infancy and childhood, of which 100% of children in the USA are infected with the virus by 2–3 years of age.
