Hum Tum

HumTum

Hum Tum is a Bollywood movie, released in India on May 28, 2004, directed by Kunal Kohli and produced by Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra. Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan star as the main characters Karan and Rhea. Hum Tum (translates as You and Me or just You Me) is loosely based on When Harry Met Sally following the encounters of the two main characters until they, after several years and various meetings, become friends and finally fall in love at the end of the movie.

The comic characters Hum and Tum have their own animated sequences in the movie, where they represent the current state of Karan's and Rhea's relationship.

The film won several Filmfare Awards including Best Actress (Mukherjee), Director (Kohli), Actor in a Comic Role (Khan), Female Playback Singer (Alka Yagnik for "Saanso Ko Saanso") and Scene of the Year. It lost Best Film to Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara.

Synopsis

Karan Kapoor (Saif Ali Khan) is a struggling comic artist on his way to US. Hum and Tum are his comic characters.

On the plane to the States he meets Rhea Prakash (Rani Mukherjee). Both of them disagree on every aspect of life and after spending a day in Amsterdam, where Karan kisses Rhea to confirm their friendship, they board the plane again and separate in US.

During the years, they meet several times: in the US, where they both study (later Karan's mother (Rati Agnihotri) is Rhea`s wedding planner), in Paris, where Karan is supossed to write his book and Rhea still mourns her dead husband, and back in India where Karan tries to matchmake Rhea with his best friend, because he does not consider himself as worthy of her. They spend a night together (though in Indian releases, this scene was cut) and, suspecting they have ruined their relationship forever, Karan leaves Rhea, realizes his mistake and tries to find her, but she has disappeared.

He writes his book about Hum and Tum, but essentially, the story is his and Rhea's. She comes back to him after having read the book and finally, he confesses his love for her and they get married.
