It was founded in 1891 by Maria Bissell Hotchkiss with the encouragement of Yale University president Timothy Dwight V.

Campus and Facilities

The school is set in 545 acres (2 km²) of woodland near two lakes, which allows it to offer environmental science courses. The school is well known for its arts, photography and video programs. A 212,000-ft² (19,700 m²) athletic center opened in 2002; a 715-seat glass-enclosed performing arts center and music pavilion opened in spring 2005. Hotchkiss' 9-hole golf course was created by famed designer Seth Raynor. Hotchkiss is currently embarking on a 30 million dollar renovation and construction upgrade to its student residences. As of the start of the 2004–2005 school year Hotchkiss boasted 555 students, more than 200 faculty and staff, and one of the largest high school endowments in the country – more than $320 million.
