Horatio Torquemada Marley

Horatio Torquemada Marley is a fictional character mentioned and appearing in the Monkey Island series.

Captain Marley was the governor or Tri-Island Area and grandfather of Elaine Marley. With his First Mate Rum Rogers, Rapp Scallion (the cook) and Young Lindy (the cabin boy), had a map to the treasure Big Whoop. The evil pirate LeChuck met them on Blood Island and decided to try and get this treasure for himself. He was eventually able to buy a new ship which was faster than Marley's and able to get to Big Whoop first.

When Captain Marley and his crew eventually reached the treasure (half an hour after LeChuck) they found that they were too late so they decided to tear their map up into four pieces and take one each. They all knew too much for LeChuck so he decided to kill them. Captain Marley was lost during a sea race near Australia when his ship was thrown into a whirlpool by Ozzie Mandrill and LeChuck.

Considered dead after this, he actually landed on an island (claimed by himself to be Monkey Island, although this is doubted by many) with amnesia. Afterwards he remained a castaway on Monkey Island as the half-crazed Herman Toothrot, until having Guybrush Threepwood bring his memory back. He finally returned to Melee with his grandaughter.

The period of his amnesia, as well as when exactly he reached Monkey Island is a matter of debate, since the scenario has continuity problems. See Herman Toothrot concerning his amnesia and how and when he might have reached Monkey Island.
