Hojatoleslam

Hojatoleslam (or hojatalislam) is an honorific title meaning "proof of Islam", given to middle-ranking Shia clerics of the rank of mujtahid. It was originally applied only to leading scholars, but from about the start of the 20th century came to be used by all mujtahid following the creation of the title ayatollah for outstanding Islamic scholars.
