Heuston Station
Heuston Station, located in Dublin, Ireland is one of the country's main railway stations, serving the south, southwest and west of Ireland. It is the main railway station for the south. Heuston Station is operated by Iarnród Éireann, the national railway operator in the Republic of Ireland, with the main offices of the railway company located in the station building. The main maintenance depot, at Inchicore, is located approximately two miles from the station. Heuston Station is connected to Connolly Station by the Red Line of the Luas light rail system.
Heuston Station was called Kingsbridge Station from its opening in 1846 until its renaming in 1966 after Sean Heuston, an Easter Rising rebel who previously worked in the station offices. The station was designed by Sancton Wood and until the recent refurbishment was one of Dublin's less well liked stations. Since its renewal it includes an Eason's branch, as well as some cafés/restaurants.
Intercity services all leave the station on a single mainline, the line to Cork, diverging to their various destinations at several points along the route. Destinations served:
- Cork (also Limerick Junction, Charleville, Mallow)
- Limerick (serving Kildare, Portlaoise, Thurles and diverging at Limerick Junction)
- Tralee (diverging at Mallow and serving Killarney)
- Waterford (diverging after Kildare, serving Athy, Carlow, Kilkenny)
- Galway (diverging after Portarlington and serving Athlone and Athenry)
- County Mayo (diverging after Athlone, serving Claremorris and splitting at Manulla Junction to serve Westport and Ballina)
