Hajduk (Hajdú in singular) were Hungarian irregular or mercenary soldiers in the 16th and 17th centuries. The term is most often applied to several thousand soldiers who were emancipated and given lands in eastern Hungary by Transylvanian prince Stephen Bocskai. These hajduk gave their name to a number of settlements.
Hajdú was a historical county in the Kingdom of Hungary.
