Background
In 2003 the German armed forces, in search of a companion firearm for the HK MP7 submachine gun, asked Heckler und Koch to develop a suitable pistol. Using the same 4.6 x 30 mm bottlenecked cartridge (see Internal ballistics) that the HK MP7 uses, HK developed the UCP. The 4.6 round used in these two weapons is the direct competitor to FN's 5.7 round. Both have high armor-piercing capabilities, minute recoil, high accuracy, and relatively low stopping power when compared to other common military handgun cartriges, such as the 9x19 Parabellum and .45 ACP.
Odd similarities exist between the UCP and Fabrique Nationale's Five-seveN. Both use odd, low-caliber bottlenecked rounds fired at high velocities. Both also are developed to share ammuntion with and complement as sidearms submachine guns (the FN P90 in the case of the FN Five-seveN).
