History
Holar was founded in 1106 A.D. Hólar soon became one of Iceland's two main centers of learning. Holar was one of the few remaining strongholds Catholicism held in Iceland during the Reformation. At its peak Holar accounted for a quarter of all of Iceland's bishops. The first printing press was in introduced to Hólar in 1530. Hólar Agricultural College was founded 1882. The college was renamed Hólar University College in 2003.
