Grigory Sokolov
Grigory Sokolov (born in 1950 in St. Petersburg) is a Russian pianist.
Sokolov gave his first major recital in Moscow at the age of 12, and came to international attention after winning the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. He was largely unknown in the West, however, until the late 1970s, but has been steadily gaining popularity since.
Sokolov records all of his albums live, and has released music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, among others. He is known for his non-standard interpretations and well-developed technique.
