The brand's creator, Prudencio Unanue, moved from Spain to Puerto Rico, where he married Carolina Casal and established themselves. They moved to New York and had four children, including Joseph A. Unanue. Prudencio founded Goya Foods in 1936. In Puerto Rico, Goya Foods has a manufacturing plant in Bayamón.

Goya's main concern used to be in the production of rice and beans. However, with time, Goya expanded to include many other types of foods, such as adobo seasoning, carbonated refreshments, tropical juices, tomato sauce, etc.
