Gowanus Expressway

(Redirected from Gowanus Parkway)
The original Gowanus Expressway in 1954, before widening. This part was built on the BMT Third Avenue Elevated.
The eastbound Gowanus Expressway at exit 24
The north end of original Gowanus Expressway in 1954, before widening. The exit to the right now serves the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway; the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is straight ahead.

The Gowanus Expressway is an expressway in the Borough of Brooklyn, City of New York. A part of Interstate 278, it connects the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, with junctions along the way with the Shore Parkway (part of the Belt Parkway) and the Prospect Expressway. The portion north/east of its junction with the Belt Parkway is a reconstruction of the former Gowanus Parkway, a cars-only highway, considered part of the Belt Parkway. Part of the Gowanus Parkway was built on the structure of the BMT Third Avenue Line, a closed elevated railway.

Recently, the New York State Department of Transportation has considered putting part or all of the elevated road underground.
