Goran Bregovic
Goran Bregović (born March 22, 1950) is one of the most recognizable modern composers of the Balkans.
He was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia in former Yugoslavia to a Bosnian Croat father and a Bosnian Serb mother. The cult rock group White Button (Bijelo Dugme) that he founded at the age of 16 became one of the most popular groups of former Yugoslavia between the late 1970s and mid 1980s.
He was convinced by the famous film director Emir Kusturica to work for the film industry, a decision which gave way to a variety of brilliant soundtracks for such films as Time of the Gypsies, Queen Margot, Underground and Arizona Dream. His music carries both South Slavic and Gypsy themes and is a fusion of popular music with traditional polyphonic music of the Balkans, tango and brass bands. Although beign very a popular musician in the Eastern Europe, Bregović has been accued on several occasions of 'stealing' original Gypsy and folk music of the Balkans which he ultimatelly rewrote and branded as his own creation.
He is currently living in Paris.
