Gohei

Gohei (御幣), onbe (御幣) or heisoku (幣束) are zigzag-shaped paper streamers, often seen attached to shimenawa, and used in Shinto rituals. This term can also be applied to a wooden wand, decorated with such streamers. A certain type of this wand, Harae-gushi, has white streamers, that are waved left and right in a purification ritual.

Gohei are not to be confused with hataki, which look somewhat similar.
