"God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" is the fourth single from Coldplay's sophomore album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. Regional singles were released for Canada, Europe, Australia, and an enhanced version for Taiwan. Promo singles were released for UK and US.
The single cover features bassist Guy Berryman, drawn by Solve Sundsbo. The song was originally titled "Your Guess Is As Good As Mine" and wasn't intended to make the final cut on the album.
Several lines from the chorus were used without permission by rapper 50 Cent on the track "God Gave Me Style" from his second album, The Massacre.
Music Video
The music video featured scenes of the band performing with the narrative of a distressed businessman literally fading into obscurity. Like "The Scientist", the video was directed by Jamie Thraves.[1]
Quotes
Chris Martin on "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face": "That came out of playing live and wanting to have something with a bit more bounce. We were really getting into things like P.J. Harvey and Muse – things with a bit more energy."[2]
