Goa Gil
Born in 1951, Gilbert Levey (real name of this Goa trance music guru) witnessed the birth of the Hippie movement and the dawn of Acid rock in San Fransisco. Involved with the freak collectives Family Dog and Sons of Champlon, he got a one-way ticket to Amsterdam in 1969 because he didn't like the path the SF musical scene was taking.
He made his way overland to India, where he discovered the Goa beaches. He also discovered the sadhus, wandering holy men living off the forest, covering themselves with ash and drinking the elixir of the gods. Gil became himself a Sadhu, Baba Mangalanand, in the order of the Juna Akhara.
Gil and his Goan friends gathered some equipment and started DJing all night long on the beach or playing live music, the original "Full Moon Parties". For him, the dance is an active form of Meditation. The use of Trance music is a way to "redefine the ancient tribal ritual for the 21st century".
He married Ariane Macavoy, herself child of French Goan freaks. Together they formed the band The Nommos. Gil also got involved in the initially Indus-based formation Kode IV.
