Go-Go boots

Go-Go boots were originally created in the 1960s with the intention that they should be used for wearing while dancing. The term is said to have been originated by André Courrèges, who made a white, low-heeled boot, rising a bit above the ankles. The term is often used to define all types of fashion boots for women, usually knee-length boots worn with a miniskirt or dress.

During the sixties and even today, Go-Go Boots are thought to be a form of female empowerment. Go-Go dancers often wear Go-Go boots.

Go-Go boots through the decades

1960s

• Go-Go boots are usually associated with Nancy Sinatra, who popularized Go-Go Boots through her music (These Boots Are Made for Walkin') and lifestyle.

• The original Star Trek series had the female officers wearing regulation Go-Go boots with miniskirts.

• Honor Blackman and Linda Thorson as Cathy Gale and Tara King of the British television spy show, The Avengers often wore knee-length boots with outfits. Diana Rigg would wear knee-length boots as a dominatrix called the "Queen of Sin" in the episode, A Touch of Brimstone.
  • Patrick Macnee and Honor Blackman even composed a song titled, Kinky boots based on their characters.

• Marisa Mell pranced around seductively in the 1960s film, Danger: Diabolik wearing a miniskirt and boots.

• The Irwin Allen produced television show, Land of the Giants, had booted female leads in Deanna Lund and Heather Young, with contrasting miniskirts.

• Singer Jeannie C. Riley, whose 1968 "risqué" song "Harper Valley P.T.A." was a No. 1 hit record, was marketed as a sex symbol dressed in an evocative tight mini-skirt and Go-Go boots.

1970s

• Lynda Carter sported boots as the beautiful heroine Wonder Woman.

• The second season of Space: 1999 introduced the mysterious alien Maya, portrayed by Catherine Schell in a minidress and matching boots. This outfit was also the norm for series regular, Barbara Bain who portrayed Dr. Helena Russell, and female crewmembers.

• Joanna Lumley wore boots in the show The New Avengers, a spinoff of The Avengers.

• Suzanne Somers' character from Three's Company, Chrissy Snow, would wear boots usually over jeans.

• A short-lived science-fiction series, Fantastic Journey featured an Atlantean portrayed by actress Katie Saylor, dressed in a black miniskirt and black knee-length boots assisting a team lost in the Bermuda Triangle.

1980s

• The first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation would have the miniskirt and Go-Go boot combination for background female officers. In the pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint", Marina Sirtis' Deanna Troi would wear the outfit, with Denise Crosby's Tasha Yar wearing the outfit in the final scene of the episode. Marina Sirtis would don the outfit one more time for the final episode of the series All Good Things....

• Helen Slater as Supergirl wore boots as the title heroine.

1990s

• In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Terry Farrell's Jadzia Dax would wear the classic miniskirt and Go-Go boot uniform in the episode "Trials and Tribble-lations".

• Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy the Vampire Slayer would wear boots with various miniskirts primarily in the first season of the popular show, an outfit that defined the character.

• Elizabeth Hurley would wear grey metallic boots in the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery with a matching miniskirt. In the same film, 'fembots' (women with 1960s hairdos, go-go boots, and hotpants), are introduced over Nancy Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'.

• Fran Drescher's The Nanny would frequently wear Go-Go boots with various outfits, as did Melissa Joan Hart in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

• Denise Richards would wear a blouse, skirt, and black knee-length boots for the required school uniform in Starship Troopers.

The 21st Century

• Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse had the actresses Milla Jovovich and Sienna Guillory portraying tough heroines, Alice and Jill Valentine in miniskirts and knee-high leather Go-Go boots.
• The comedy Soul Plane featured airline stewardesses in purple minidresses and gold Go-Go boots.
• Secretary of Defense, Condoleezza Rice, has been noted for her commanding clothes consisting of black knee-high leather boots complimenting an oufit of a black skirt and flowing 'Matrix'-like coat, thought to be a combination of 'sex and power'...
• The sci-fi show, Lexx featured the very attractive character Zev(later Xev)Bellringer--a half-lizard/half-human--respectively portrayed by actresses, Eva Habermann and Xenia Seeberg, whose everyday wear consisted of a one-piece minidress and go-go boots.
• Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, Rachel McAdams, and Amanda Seyfried would do a 'sensuous' dance to 'Jingle Bells' wearing Christmas miniskirts and black go-go boots in Mean Girls.
• Renée Zellweger would wear black go-go boots for the European promotional poster and film, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, the sequel to the first film, Bridget Jones's Diary.
• Sarah Michelle Geller would wear purple go-go boots as 'Daphne' in the live-action version of Scooby-Doo, based on the famous cartoon of the same name.
• Joy Bryant would wear go-go boots in the retro film Baadasssss! directed by Mario Van Peebles.
• Jane Krakowski would have a seductive scene, wearing black boots while sitting in the back of a car, in the Jude Law remake of Alfie.
