Gimel is the third letter of the Aramaic, Syriac, Phoenician and Hebrew alphabets. The Phoenician letter gave rise to the Greek Gamma and the Latin C and G. The word derives from the Phoenician for "camel", and the shape of the letter is thought to have originally represented a camel.
In gematria, Gimel represents the number three. Its script is a vav with a yud as a foot and resembles a person in motion, symbolically a rich man running after a dalet to give him charity. The word gimel is considered as if derived from gemul, which means the giving of reward and punishment.
