George Vasiliou
George Vasiliou (in greek Γιώργος Βασιλείου)was the president of the republic of Cyprus 1988–1993 and the founder and leader of United Democrats party.
His father was a member of the central committee of AKEL and a doctor who fought on the side of the communists in the Hellenic Civil War. After the end of civil war his family was in Eastern Europe. George went to university in Hungary and was a student of Imre Nagy.
He was elected president with the support of AKEL. As a president he stopped the practice of police files on citizens' political beliefs. He negotiated a solution of the Cyprus dispute based on the Ghali set of ideas.
