GeoTagging

GeoTagging also known as GeoCoding is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media such as websites, RSS feeds or images. This data usually consists of latitude and longitude coordinates, though it can also include altitude and placenames.

A good example of this is being used in a website called GeoBloggers, where they are encouraging people to add 'GeoTags' to their Flickr images, which enables the images to be found via a location search. For instance, if I wanted to see pictures taken at a certain latitude and longitude I could enter the coordinates and the site would return the images taken near to that location. Or if a website or news story had been GeoTagged I could search for news or websites in a specific or general location.

Some of the latest digital cameras have a built-in GPS receiver, which automatically adds the GeoTags to the Exif data embedded in the photos.
