Gender has several meanings in modern usage:

• Gender is usually used to refer to the perceived masculinity or femininity of a person or characteristic. It is also decreasingly used as a synonym for sex. Today this meaning is considered by many to be non-standard English.

• Grammatical gender – in the grammar of some languages, all nouns and pronouns are assigned a grammatical gender.

• Gender of connectors and fasteners – in electrical and mechanical trades, each of a pair of mating connectors is conventionally assigned the designation male or female.

• The gender (pronounced with a hard G, as in "get") is an Indonesian musical instrument used in gamelan orchestras. See gender (music)
