Gebaude

Gebäude (pronounced geh-BOY-duh) is an avant-garde/experimental music group out of Chicago, Illinois. The group consists of: The founding member, who is known as Jethro along with Miss Crystal and His Angel. Jethro, does all the recording, technical work, and occasionally voice. Miss Crystal and His Angel contribute voice and various instrumentation. Their instrumentation includes: clarinet, oboe, recorder, and keyboard.

The Sound

The group's sound is created through the combination of very heavily edited prerecorded instrumental loops, instrument or noise recording, and voice. The basic structure of a song is usually created through the use of prerecorded instrumental loops. The song is then fit with recorded noise, instruments, or voice. All the members have contributed voice thus far. Jethro's voice is either in the form of lyrics or in the form of anti-melodic screams, almost gibberish sounding grunts, and other various non lyrical vocal noises from whispers to primal screams. The lyrical spectrum of his voice is angrily screamed with an almost howling quality. Miss Crystal's and His Angel's voices, contributing lyrics only, are similar and used in much the same way as Jethro except they have an innocent quality and do not sound angry or howling. Recorded instruments include: clarinet, recorder, and kayboard. The use of such instruments is only limited to what the particular song will allow for. The recorded instruments are either used as they are recorded or edited (much in the same way as the prerecorded instruments). Noise is a central ingrediant. Noise itself is a broad idea and Jethro's use of noise is only limited to the broad idea of the term itself. The primary sources for noise, thus far, has been through the use of very heavily edited prerecorded and recorded sound/instruments and sound used as it has been recorded. The primary source for recorded sound, thus far, has been, through the use of various construction materials, and the destruction of glass and ceramic objects, along with tin cans and so forth.

The Philosophy

The philosophy of the group is that noise is music. This philosophy is based on the idea that asks what is music? The sound of the group ranges from, on one end of the spectrum, conventional music and conventional music with noise and, on the other end, slightly structured or even unstructured noise. Once in a while harsh single tones can be heard. The use of the noise aspect of the sound is either to create an alternative, to conventional, music or to create a sound as harsh as possible to irritate or cause a feeling of sickness within the listener. Most of the sound lies within the medium range of the spectrum between harsh noise and conventional music.

A scondary philosophy of the group is the idea of improvisational editing. Improvisational editing is the idea of taking a fully finished song and either changing the technical aspects (with a general idea which limits the editing) or changing the actual tracks used in the song, in the same way as the technical aspects. When the tracks are changed, a percussive track can only be exchanged for a percussive track and so on for each instrument/noise in the song. Each version of the song has the same title. The song itself is not the exact instruments or technicals the listener is hearing. The song is an idea of how the instruments, noises, or technicals are used.
