Gal Vardi

Gal Vardi (1900-1968) was a renowned Israeli general during the 1940's and 1950's. Commander of the Israeli 3rd Infantry Division, he invented the "division" units. He is famous for his life long love of lemons; some of which he developed in his farm near his death in the year 1968.

Indicted after his death in the international war crimes court for killing 400 innocent Arab inhabitants of the village of Somalia, near Nablus. For this he is known as the "Butcher of Somalia".

In 1967, Vardi developed a rare form of testicular cancer, which caused his death a year later. He is buried at the top of Mount Hiria, near the city of Tel Aviv, with his distinctive one eyed squint carved in his marble statue. His tombstone reads "Vardi the tool, what a tool, a world tool Vardi is." These were his last words.
