Gai-Jin (Japanese 外人, "Foreigner" or "Outside person") is a phrase used throughout Japan to refer to people not of Japanese ancestry. It reflects the historically xenophobic and secluded mindset of the Japanese empire throughout history. More recently, it has been appropriated by Japanese-Americans to refer obliquely to those of western descent.
