Gag (disambiguation)
The word gag has a variety of meanings:
- A device designed to prevent speech: see gag.
- A comedian's term for a joke.
- An intransitive verb to describe the feeling of choking or accompanying involuntary muscular contractions in the throat. See gag reflex.
- In law a "gagging writ" or "gag order" is a writ or court order taken out with an intent to prevent information or comment from being made public. Note that the language used to describe this concept varies between jurisdictions, and as legal language has changed over the years.
- Dentists, surgeons and vets use the word "gag" to mean a device used to hold the mouth open, such as a Jennings gag or a Whitehead gag or a Hallam gag. See gag (medical device).
- Gags are also sometimes used in consensual BDSM activities: see gag (BDSM).
