GAT-X102 Duel Gundam
In the television anime series Gundam Seed, the GAT-X102 Duel Gundam was the first mobile suit developed under the Earth Alliance's "G Project" during the opening months of the Bloody Valentine War. The Duel Gundam is mostly identical in armament to Mobile Suit Gundam's RX-78–2 Gundam. On Cosmic Era 25 January 71, Duel Gundam Unit 1 is stolen from Morgenroete, Inc.'s Heliopolis facility by ZAFT mobile suit pilot Yzak Joule. Subsequent Duel Gundam units are manufactured on Earth and distributed to evaluation units, and data from these units, as well as Kira Yamato's GAT-X105 Strike Gundam Unit 1, are used to develop the GAT-01 series of mobile suits.
The Duel Gundam is the first mobile suit ever to be equipped with Phase Shift armor.
In several early battles with the Strike Gundam Unit 1 piloted by Kira Yamato, the Duel Gundam is damaged severely, losing an arm on one instance (PHASE-05 Phase Shift Down) and suffering a penetrating hit in another instance that caused injury to its pilots face. After these battles, the Duel Gundam is equipped with a 34.37 ton armor system called Assault Shroud, which it continues to use until the end of the war.
In battle, the Duel Gundam proves highly effective in combat with the Alliance's hordes of mass-produced GAT-01 Strike Dagger mobile suits, and frequently racks up admirable scores of the suits. It also destroys the GAT-X252 Forbidden Gundam, by sacrificing the Assault Shroud as a decoy.
The Duel Gundam has two derivative mass-production mobile suits, the early production GAT-01D Long Dagger and mass production GAT-01D1 Duel Dagger. Both Long Dagger and Duel Dagger have a heavily protected "Fortressa Mode" analogous to the Duel Gundam's Assault Shroud. The two suits are nearly identical, the only difference being that the Long Dagger is designed for use by Living CPUs or Coordinators, while the Duel Dagger is equipped with the same Natural-use OS as the GAT-01 Strike Dagger. One Long Dagger was tested and stolen by insane "Combat Coordinator" Eleven Socius, and another was used by Jean Carry; a.k.a. "Glittering Star J", before he defected to the Three Ships Alliance and piloted an MBF-M1 M1 Astray before the end of the war. Two Duel Daggers were piloted by EA ace Edward Harrelson and EA mobile suit instructor Rena Imelia.
