Futari wa Pretty Cure

Futari wa Pretty Cure (ふたりはプリキュア) (often shorted simply to Pretty Cure or PreCure) is a magical girl anime series, currently one of the most famous, running in Japan. Japanese broadcaster polls indicate top viewers include young girls and older teenage boys.

Essentially it is two girls who fight the forces of the Dusk Zone (no relation to Dark Kingdom) a dimension of evil which encroached on the Kingdom of Light, neccesitating the escape of two of that land's protectors, odd talkative creatures named Mipple and Mepple. They are best described as a cross between a chinchilla and a marshmallow. They serve as a source of information and peanut gallery for the series, and are usually found within the girls' transformation devices which resemble cell phones. For short periods they can transform into their real selves and interact more easily with each other.

Unlike most magical girls, they rely mostly on their physical power. Also, most other magical girl series featuring a character working solo or a full 5 person team (sentai), and PreCure is unusual in having a duo.

Despite mostly being considered by American fandom as an otherwise unremarkable series, it is almost wholly known by non-viewers from the tongue-in-cheek non-canonical yuri fandom made infamous on image boards like Futaba Channel and 4chan. A common meme is to have other characters dressed as them, particularly characters who are themselves popular in yuri fandom.

Many amusing examples from the fandom can be cited.

• The tomboyish Nagisa and quiet intellectual Honoka are the core of the cast, with other characters featured occasionally. The series is primarily about their friendship more than anything, and their polar personalities in dealing with each other. Some fans even joke Nagisa worries over Honoka like a nervous boyfriend would.
• The two require each other to use their powers effectively, as shown in the famous 'holding hands' attack used to destroy MOTDs.
• Each of their mascots is in love with the other.
• One of the only other examples of a magical duo are arugably Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus from Sailor Moon, who were in fact lovers.
