Fictional curse word

Fictional curse words are invented by many authors to replace or to stand in for real curses.

There are a number of reasons that such words are invented; primarily, it is as a form of self-censorship, in which real curse words are replaced with the fictional ones in order to avoid causing offence or, in the case of films and television programmes, to avoid being given an adult rating. Fictional curse words are also used in science fiction in order to express changes in language over time.

On of the most famous examples of a fictional curse word is smeg, which was used in the British comedy programme Red Dwarf.
