Eugene Jolas

Eugene Jolas (1894-1952) was a writer, translator and literary critic.

He was born in Union City, New Jersey, but grew up in Lorraine in France to which his family returned when he was two years old. He spent periods of his adult life living in both the USA and France, but wrote mostly in English.

Along with his wife Maria McDonald and Elliot Paul, in 1927 he founded the influential Parisian literary magazine, Transition.
