Equivalent National Tertiary Entry Rank

Equivalent National Tertiary Entry Rank (ENTER) is the national Australian tertiary entrance score, administered by the AVCC (Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee). It is designed to make it easy to compare entrance scores for students educated in different states, to ease the process of admission for university applicants from interstate.

It is a score out of 100.00. It is the same as the state entrance score for Victoria and New South Wales, as issued to students by the state education authorities' or university admissions consortium, although while in Victoria it is called an ENTER in New South Wales it is called a UAI. In some other states, a different numeric score is used (e.g. Queensland's OP), but conversion tables are published to convert this score to/from an ENTER. In particular, the high school curriciulum and structure for each state are determined by the state government, although the method of calculating the entrance score is determined by the universities, they must respond to the structure of the state scores, and to changes in them. (i.e., the content of the insturction, assignments and exams and methods of calculating the individual subject scores are determined by the state governments; the universities decide by what method these individual subject scores will yield an ENTER or equivalent.)

Each state's university and government education authorities determines the method of calculation of the ENTER or state-equivalent for students from that state, due to the historical differences between different state's education systems. However, these decisions are co-ordinated necessary to ensure that the necessary equivalence is maintained (i.e. so that a score of 90 from Victoria will indicate a sufficiently similiar degree of attainment as a score of 90 from NSW, in spite of the differences in each score's methods of application.)
