Eleutheria i thanatos

Eleutheria i thanatos is the motto of the Hellenic Republic. It is pronounced el-ef-ther-ee-a ee than-at-os, meaning "Liberty or Death". It arose during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, where it was a war cry for the Greek rebels, as Greece was formerly ruled by the Ottoman Empire. It was adopted after the Greek War of Independence. It is still in use today.
