Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat

(Redirected from Duvel)

Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat is a Belgian family brewery. It was founded in 1871 by Jan-Leonard Moortgat. The brewery was then simply named Moortgat. After World War I, the beer brewed by Moortgat was known as Victory Ale. In 1923, they changed the name to Duvel which became one of the best-known Belgian beers. In 1930, they launched Bel Pils. The Vedett, a luxury pils was created in 1945 by Albert Moortgat (son of Jan-Leonard). In the 1950s, the third generation of Moortgat took control of the brewery. Since 1963, Moortgat has brewed the Maredsous abbey beers. In 1989, they decided to found a new brewery along with Palm Breweries (on the basis of a 50–50 deal) called Steendonck (wheat beer). In 2000, a new beer (Passendale) is born as a result of the association between Moortgat and cheese factory Campina (producing Passendale cheese).

The Duvel is a strong gold-coloured ale. The name of the beer originates in the dialect form of the Dutch word Duivel, which is Devil in English.
