Device Manager

A tool included with Microsoft Windows operating systems, the device manager is a tool that can display and control the hardware attacted to a computer running a Windows-based operating system. When a piece of hardware is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted where the user can deal with it. As well as providing control, it also provides a list of hardware, which can be sorted by various criteria.

Users can:

  • Supply device drivers for hardware
  • Tell Windows to ignore malfunctioning devices
  • View a hardware's properties

Running device manager

Windows 9x

  • Right click My Computer
  • Select properties
  • Select Device Manager tab

Windows XP

  • Right click My Computer
  • Select properties
  • Select hardware tab
  • Click device manager button.
